Big Tancook Island is the largest of the 365 islands in Mahone Bay and is located 6 miles south of Chester on the Atlantic edge of Mahone bay. The island’s name is thought to derive from the Mi’kmaq meaning “facing the open sea". The island was settled by German & English families in the late 18th century and was originally called Queen Charlotte’s Island. Access is via a daily year round passenger ferry from Chester. The island is 3 miles long and 1 mile wide. It has a year round population of about 125 which increases to about 200 in the summer.
