LOCATION
Big Tancook Island is the largest of the 365 islands in Mahone Bay and is located 6 miles south of Chester on the Atlantic edge of Mahone Bay. The island’s name is thought to derive from the Mi’kmaq meaning “facing the open sea “. The Island was settled by German and English families in the late 18th century and was originally called Queen Charlotte’s Island. Access is via a daily year round passenger ferry from Chester. The island is 3 miles long and 1 mile wide. The 50 minute ferry ride offers a special way to experience the beauty of the bay and once on Big Tancook Island there are many kilometers of quiet country roads and walking trails that offer ever-changing views of the bay. It has a year round population of about 125 which increases to about 200 in the summer.

Big Tancook Island is a 50 minute passenger ferry ride from Chester and runs daily year round.
