LOCATION Big Tancook Island is 6 miles south of Chester in the spectacular sailing waters of Mahone Bay and is accessed several times daily by passenger ferry. The population is about 125 and increases to 200 in the summer. The island is 550 acres of a nature lover's paradise providing a comfortable and relaxing vacation or year-round home. Islanders earned their living by the sea – fishing and building the sturdy “Tancook Schooner”. The word “Tancook” means “facing the open sea” but our house looks across the bay to many of the 365 islands of the bay.
THE PROPERTY From the ferry road look up to your right and the Island Cape, situated on 1.7 acres, is the deep red one welcoming you onto the island. Built circa 1849, this solid west facing house sits on a ridge overlooking the harbour. This treasure was salvaged from certain decay by descendants of the original builders many years ago & the current owners have honoured their work with many sympathetic upgrades. The original fireplace, hutch, pine floors, doors & mouldings are still in tack. In keeping with the age of the house it has been recently reshingled in cedar shakes – white on the walls & red on the roof. The furnace blower & water pump were replaced last year, the bath 3 years ago, the septic 5 years ago & the windows & doors 6 years ago.
