Rescue equals Rescue?
We have returned from Manitoba on the 11th of March and are bringing 58 horses to the Maritimes, that includes PEI, Cape Breton and New Brunswick.
The PMU horses whose pictures you see on our web site are the lucky ones. The farmer who owned them was in the position to care for them in such a way that the animals are well fed and healthy (physically and psychologically speaking). Not all farmers find themselves in that fortunate position. Many cannot afford to keep feeding the horses adequately nor provide them with a healthy living environment outside of the PMU barns and summer pastures.
Our first group of horses scheduled to arrive in Nova Scotia consists of the latter kind. There are 10 yearlings, eight 2-year olds, and 2 older mares who are undernourished and need extra care. BUT, once you look beyond the obvious, you see beautiful animals. However, these horses require very experienced horse people who provide gentle, patient, and knowledgeable environments. Therefore, we know that we will not be able to place them immediately. In order to make this rescue effort possible, the horses you see on our web site have to subsidize the other ones. So, if you look at a price which is higher than the anticipated $1,000, it is for either that reason or because the farmer wanted a higher price for them on the outset.
We also depend on sponsors, donations, or loans to help those of the horses who are the more severe rescue cases.
The first horses will be shipped to the Bridgewater area and to Cape Breton. We still need a drop-off place in Cape Breton, so if you know of somebody who could take 18 horses for a week or two, please let us know ASAP.
CBC Television did a feature on our rescue effort. You can watch it on: http://novascotia.cbc.ca/tv/canadanow
National Post did a feature on our rescue effort as well (appeared on Friday, March 12th). To read the article, go to:

Looking for homes for 20-25 Belgian mares due to foal between March and April 2004. They are between 7-15 years of age and weigh between 1800 and 2400 lb. These mares were originally from a Premarin farm in SW Canada that closed down and were scheduled to go to slaughter. They were rescued by a family in Pennsylvania before this could happen. They are now a little south of Erie, Pa. They are asking between $650 and $850 per mare.
If anyone is interested, email me privately at kman12582@frontiernet.net. Please pass this around to anyone you feel might be interested. I am networking this information for these horses to get placed and will forward the contact info to you privately. thanks. A.Leigh
