Port Mouton is a small seaside village most famous for its many beautiful white sand beaches, including the crown jewel known as Carters Beach. Legend has it that the village takes its name because in 1604 a sheep from the ship of Samuel de Champlain became so excited to see land after such a long journey that it jumped overboard and very adeptly and happily swam ashore. In fact, Champlain must have thought that that was a pretty good idea because he built a temporary camp in SW Port Mouton at Bull Point.
